Tustin Time Line

Tustin Time Line:

1801 - The Spanish Empire granted 62,500 acres (253 km2) to
Jose Antonio Yorba, which he named Rancho San Antonio.
Yorba's great rancho included the lands where the cities of Orange,
Villa Park, Santa Ana, Tustin, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach stand today.

1868 - Columbus Tustin and his partner, Nelson O. Stafford,
purchased 1300 acres of the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana

1868 through 1872 - Tustin set about establishing "Tustin City"
1872 - Tustin City Post Office
1877 - Tustin competes for Southern-Pacific Railroad southern terminus
1880's - Land boom helps expand "Tustin City"
1881 - First Advent Christian Church of Tustin
1882 - The Tustin Prebyterian Church
1882 - Knights of Pythias > More
1883 - Columbus Tustin dies
1884 - The Rattlesnake Hill Mercury Mine
1886 - First street car pulled into Tustin (Public Transportation)
1887 - Tustin Water Works
1887 - Bank of Tustin
1888 - The Tustin Hotel - (Razed in 1914)
1890's - Tustin well established an agricultural community. Groves of
apricots and walnuts gradually were replaced by Valencia oranges.
1890 - First Tustin Libray (Reading Room in the Tustin Grammar School )
1890 - Constable William Jerome (One person - no Police Dept.)

1900 - Firts cement sidewalk (*Utts's Store / By William Jerome Sr.)
1905 - Telephones & Electricty (*The Rancho San Joaquin Gazette-Oct 1918)
1907 - The Utt Juice company (Razed in 2007)
1908 - Homes numbered
1912 - Tustin Blacksmith Shop (245 South C. Street)
1914 - Tustin Grammer School
1915 - Volunteer Fire Department
1915 - The Tustin Garage

1915 - Asphalt on Main Street (*The Rancho San Joaquin Gazette -Oct 1918)

1922 - Tustin Union High School
1925 - The Knights of Pytias Building (On site of Ed Utts home)
1926 -
1927 - The population had topped 900 and the voters deemed
it was time to incorporate. The new City Council elected
Byron Crawford the first mayor and hired "Big John" Stanton as
the police force. The volunteer firemen continued to serve,
using Sam Tustin's converted 1912 Buick fire truck
(now on display in the Tustin Area Museum).
